Tips on getting the best auto insurance quotes

We're all used to getting very expensive auto insurance quotes from very different providers. It's not surprising to see a person paying several thousand dollars for insuring a single car these days. And while such outrageous prices are often explained by insurers through a multitude of factors ranging from bad economy to fuel prices, it is surely unacceptable to pay part of the car's entire cost for keeping it insured for only a year. And while the obligatory nature of auto insurance can surely get on one's nerves, there are many effective solutions to making it a lot more affordable. Here are some tips on how to do that:
Shop around
If there would be only a single possible solution to use, comparison shopping would be the first to think about. It's hard to overestimate the potential of comparing auto insurance quotes when it comes to making insurance more affordable. By simply comparing the offers from competing companies you can save hundreds and even thousands of dollars every year. Just make sure you know what exactly you want with your policy and keep comparing quotes for this exact set of coverage. You will be surprised how effective this can be, just spend a few minutes comparing different quotes on a special resourse like this.
Review your policy
Quite often people take what they are offered by their agents or brokers without looking deep into the contents of the policy. And this may often be the reason why they're overpaying hundreds of dollars each year. Make sure to study the contents of your policy and adjust them to your current needs. Change coverage limits to what's more appropriate in your area and exclude the types you don't really need. This can be a very effective cost-cutting measure, just make sure to not get carried away and cut the policy to the bare minimum - you don't want to be underinsured in case of a serious accident.
Get discounts
You will be surprised to learn how common the discounts really are. They are generally available through all insurers, even if not advertised. There are many common discounts such as good driving record, loyal client, multiple vehicle, successful student, senior driver, military worker, low mileage and so on. Just ask the insurer and see if you can opt for any of the discount they have - this alone can make your policy more affordable.
Change the vehicle
Needless to say, all of the aforementioned tips can be applied simultaneously for better results. But what if there's still no significant effect? This usually means that your car is simply expensive to insure to begin with. If you drive a sports car or an SUV it is obvious that you won't find cheap insurance. However, some family vehicles can be expensive to insure as well. That's why you should consider changing your car to a model that is generally cheap to insure in the first place. This can drop your insurance costs a lot, although it will come at a price of giving up your favorite car model.

Tips for Getting Cheap Auto Insurance

Everyone wants to pay less for insurance. Thanks to the Internet, it is much easier to find affordable insurance today. In fact, you can find cheap auto insurance quickly. Use the following recommendations to save money on coverage.

1. Qualify for Discounts

Insurer discounts remain one of the easiest ways to get cheap insurance. There are a variety of discounts you can get to save as much as 50% or more on premiums. Each insurance company has its own set of discounts so it is important to research your options. Find the agency that offers the most discounts you qualify to receive so you save more on your policy.

2. Maintain Good Credit

Many drivers are unaware they may be paying higher insurance rates just because they have poor credit. Insurers consider credit to be a good indicator of a driver's likelihood to cause accidents or to file claims. You have a better chance of getting cheap auto insurance if you improve your credit score. It is essential you monitor your credit reports so that you do not overpay for coverage.

3. Live in a Low-Crime Neighborhood

Where you live and work has a direct impact on how much you pay for coverage. Drivers who live or work in communities with high crime rates end up paying more for insurance. You can save money by moving or at least taking precautions to keep your vehicle safe. Insurers will reduce your rates if you park your vehicle in a garage.

4. Drive a Safe Vehicle

Safety is important to insurance companies. They want you to be a safe driver, and they also want you to drive a vehicle with certain safety features. You can save money on coverage if you drive a vehicle that has airbags, seat belts, and anti-lock brakes. Vehicles with high safety ratings typically qualify for lower insurance rates. And, you can get lower rates if your vehicle has a security system.

5. Shop Around

It has never been easier to find cheap auto insurance. Comparison shopping is faster online. You can get multiple quotes from major insurers to consider your options. Once you find the policy you want, just purchase it online. It only takes a few moments to request and compare quotes. Researching insurance companies is equally easy.

Types of policies and cheap auto insurance

If you're new to auto insurance, one of the most important things you need to learn is the fact that there are different policy types available. And depending on the type you choose the chance for obtaining cheap auto insurance is altered significantly. The choice of the right policy type usually depends on your current situation and insurance needs. So when shopping for a new policy make sure to choose from the following according to your exact requirements:

Third party liability

Third party liability policies are the simplest thing you will find on the market and offer the easiest way to obtain cheap auto insurance. However, their main downside is the lack of any additional coverage options except the basic third party liability. This option usually fits best with old cars that are fully owned and have little current market value on them.

Third party, fire and theft

This policy type builds on the basic option by adding additional coverage against fire and theft, which can be a serious peril in some areas. The extra coverage will naturally make the policy more expensive, but it is still possible to get cheap auto insurance with this policy type by shopping around or looking for discounts. Third party, fire and theft is usually recommended for vehicles that have a significant current market value on them but are fully owned by the driver.

Fully comprehensive

Fully comprehensive insurance policies are the costliest and the most common policy type in the country. The reason for this is the fact that any vehicle that is financed through a loan is obliged to carry such a policy. And knowing how financing is popular in the US, it's no big surprise to see the most expensive policy type being the most widespread. Getting cheap auto insurance with such an option can prove to be very challenging, unless you are an insurance expert. Usually, the only way to start saving money is simply paying off the loan and switching to a more affordable policy type.

No fault

This is a special version of the fully comprehensive policy type that simply makes it easier to get coverage. Despite the common belief that such a policy takes off the fault from the car owner in any situation, it simply implies that you receive the coverage whether you're at fault or not. Naturally, such a convenience comes at an additional price.

Special

Special insurance policies always come at special prices and are aimed at special vehicles. These usually include collectibles, classic, retro and unique cars. Talking about cheap auto insurance here is certainly irrelevant, since being able to afford such a vehicle implies having enough money to pay for the insurance as well.
No matter what type of insurance coverage you land, always shop among multiple companies and change variables inside a company too on quotes collector site.

Credit rating and auto insurance quotes

When discussing the influence the different factors render upon auto insurance quotes, people often talk about the car being insured, or the driving record of a person possessing it. Some may also take the place of residence or marital status into account, which also matter to a degree. But quite often people overlook a very simple and ubiquitous factor that sometimes has a tremendous effect on auto insurance quotes yet has nothing to do with driving whatsoever. If it's hard for you to guess what we're talking about, it's quite likely that you actually don't know that this factor is taken into account. And that's normal, because insurance companies don't ask their customers to provide their credit rating when getting auto insurance quotes.
That's right, we're talking about credit rating or credit scores, which are based on a person's credit history and have a huge impact on the person's ability to employ various financial instruments such as credits or loans. To put it simple, credit score is a numeric indicator of how good you are when it comes to settling or managing your debts. The better you perform, the easier it is to get more money lent to you on better conditions. Sure, these are the basics everyone knows of very well after getting their very first credit or loan. But what does it have to do with auto insurance quotes in the first place?
Insurers are obsessive when it comes to assessing risk because their revenue depends on how well they are able to do just that. So if there's any piece of information that can help them to assess risk more accurately they will use it no matter how irrelevant this may seem to the general public. That's exactly the case with credit scores. After extensive analysis of statistical data, insurance specialists have identified a link between a person's credit score and claim probability. This link can be expressed in a few notions:
  • People with good credit scores tend to be better drivers and file fewer claims
  • People with average credit scores tend to file insurance claims on average rates
  • People with below the average credit scores file claims more often than the average
  • There seems to be a relation between how a person deals with their finances and how they behave behind the steering wheel
Needless to say, insurers were very happy to find such a relation and they didn't hesitate a moment to lobby a permission that allowed them to access credit score information of their clients without having to notify them about it. And while this may look like a violation of your privacy, there's nothing you can really do about it but comply. It's just the way things work with insurance companies and you only have two options in this situation: search for those few insurers that don't use credit score data or turn it into an advantage by improving your credit rating. The latter certainly looks like a very fruitful strategy.
You see, the credit score is a very important variable that may affect various aspects of your life, not just auto insurance quotes. And it will make perfect sense to do everything necessary to improve the score because the consequences will be very positive from many points of view. That's why instead of getting into pointless battles with insurance companies about your credit score it would be much better if you got a copy of your credit report and hired a professional adviser to work out a strategy for improving your rating. It may be a very tedious and lengthy process, but it will ultimately pay off. And it's not just about auto insurance quotes that will get more affordable as soon as you get a better score - credits, loans and mortgages will become more affordable and easier to get. So think about it and make the right decision when it comes to credit rating.

Objections to the Radical Changes to Michigan's No-Fault Insurance Law

In most states, when an auto accident occurs, it is important to identify who was at fault for the accident. Typically, the person at fault (and their car insurance company) will be responsible for paying any damages that occurred due to the accident. The reasoning is that you should not be stuck paying for potential lifelong medical bills or a new car when you did nothing wrong. Additionally, sometimes charges need to be filed against the person who caused the accident. However, the result of finding out who is at fault typically leads to a bunch of time investigating or going to court - as each car insurance company wants the other person to be found to be at fault so that they do not have to pay. This can get expensive quickly.
In order to attempt to bring down these costs, and therefore the cost of car insurance in general, many states have put into place "no-fault" insurance laws. Michigan is one of 16 states that have one of these no-fault laws, but that law may soon be changing. Although many people in Michigan support at least some type of change to this law, there are some people who are fighting the current proposition for many reasons that they state are against the best interest of the public.
Supposedly, the main benefit of no-fault insurance laws is the cost savings passed to drivers. Massachusetts was the first state to introduce a no-fault insurance law, and 15 states have since enacted similar laws. The idea of this law is that by removing the costs involved in fighting the causes of an accident, insurance companies will lower their prices. Opponents state that if you look at the numbers, you will see that insurance prices have not gone down, and Michigan insurance prices are actually close to 40% higher than neighboring states. Specifically, the cost of personal injury protection in Michigan has increased more than 9 times when comparing it too other no-fault states. These costs have led approximately 20% of Michigan drivers to (illegally) drive without insurance, which is dangerous for everybody.
Expense, as well as unlimited lifetime medical benefits, are two of the reasons why government officials are trying hard to change this law. Several executives of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, as well as the mayor of Detroit recently met to speak about their opposition to these changes. They argue that the bill that is being proposed as a replacement is a "compromise" and a "death sentence for people recovering from catastrophic injuries." These four executives state the following components of the bill as reasons for their objection:
  • Capping the long-term care of people suffering from auto accident injuries - this can lead to many people not able to afford their medical care.
  • Limiting care by family members at home - is unfair since family members have been proven to provide better care than strangers hired to do the job.
  • Opt out of providing lifelong, palliative care that is given to provide a reasonable quality of life. Again, people will be unable to afford care and their quality of life will be dramatically reduced.
  • Putting a limit on home care hours of 24 hours a day - this will mean that people who are injured will be unable to hire more than one home aide per shift, even if a doctor determines multiple aides are necessary.
  • Implementing a lifetime limit on physical therapy to 52 weeks, and only providing additional therapy if it is medically proven that the person can make additional progress.
  • Only allowing Michigan residents to submit claims - friends and family from out of state who are passengers in your vehicle, or who you lend your car to for a quick trip to the store, will not be covered.
Currently, this bill has been put on hold due to debates over "Obamacare", the Medicaid expansion, and the federal government shutdown. However, it should come back to the table over the next few months.

Defensive driving - a great way to get better auto insurance quotes

It's natural to look for more affordable solutions, especially when dealing with such a tedious thing as auto insurance. Sure, we all know that it's good thing to have a car insured, and that it can save a lot of money in case of an accident. But all this reasoning doesn't do much to the annoyance when you check for auto insurance quotes and see how much the thing will cost you. Yes, there are many ways to get more affordable auto insurance quotes, and there are even more articles on them. However, there's one method that is rarely considered despite its general usefulness: defensive driving.
What is defensive driving
Defensive driving is a set of rules and techniques that take the driver beyond the basic level of traffic rules. Developed by the specialists at the US National Safety Council during the 1960's as a way to train professional civilian and military drivers, the defensive driving concept has grown into an entire education subject over the decades. Now it is available through numerous public and private schools and courses, where you can get the respective training. But what does it train actually? Defensive driving is all about teaching the drivers how to avoid potentially risky situations while on the road and in traffic. The way you should act in various risky situations is also taught, which is important for minimizing the risk of collision. To put it simple, the principle is aimed at making a safer and more cautious driver out an ordinary one.
How it can help
It may look somewhat irrelevant to auto insurance quotes at first, but defensive driving can seriously affect your premiums once you complete the course. The logic is this: once you become a better and safer driver and have the certificate to prove it the insurer will downgrade your risk rating, which implies cheaper insurance. Since insurers are so sensitive about any form of risk assessment they are actually very glad when a car owner can provide a defensive driving certificate - this means that they can reduce the risk of an accident, and insurance claim respectively. So, from the insurance point of view it makes a lot of sense to enroll in defensive driving courses. Moreover, if you happen to have tickets, violations or penalty points on your driving record, in some states defensive driving courses can be used to eliminate some of these bad entries. Which, of course, means that you'll be able to get better auto insurance quotes.
How to start
Starting with defensive driving is quite easy. Since the courses are available virtually everywhere in the country, you should fine a school or course that is convenient for you in terms of schedule and location. Just make sure that they provide a fully legit certificate after the students complete the course, otherwise there's no point in enrolling. The process of learning itself can be different depending on the school you've signed up with. There may be different levels of proficiency or specialized courses for drivers in different trades. But in essence it's all about assessing the situation on the road adequately and knowing how to proceed in order to minimize risk. And that's certainly a great bonus to having cheaper auto insurance.
